Instagram has over 500 million monthly users

Instagram has announced that it now has more than 500 million monthly actives, and more than 300 million who use the app daily.

The photo and short video app’s monthly user base more than doubled in size over the past two years, adding 100 million active users faster than the previous 100 million, more than 80 per cent of the Instagram community are outside the United States.

Instagram has more than 100 million monthly actives in the Unites States, more than 95 million photos and videos are shared per day on average and 4.2 billion likes daily.

According to Amy Cole, Head of Brand Development for EMEA: “It’s incredible to think that in just five and a half years, the Instagram community has grown to half a billion. It’s exciting that we’re still growing so fast – the community has more than doubled over the past two years – and now 300 million are using Instagram every day. Brands have always been a key part of our community – and as the community continues to grow, so does the opportunity for advertisers.

“In the last few years we’ve introduced new tools and creative formats, like video carousel, to help brands drive real business results. 200,000 advertisers of all sizes and from all sectors are seeing success on Instagram.  And we’re continuing to invest, with new features like Instagram Business Tools coming to Europe later this year, so that brands can effectively connect with this highly engaged and rapidly growing community.”

Blackberry: BBM Video Calling Feature Extended to Africa

Blackberry has extended video calling services on its Messenger app to Africa and Europe. This means BBM users in Africa can now make video calls on their Android or iOS gadgets.

The video calling feature is a server-side update so it should be showing on the app already. Users need to have their devices running on Android Kitkat 4.4 or iOS 8 and above to enjoy it though.

Blackberry had first launched the service in North America and parts of Latin America.

Blackberry says the feature has limited availability as its still in the beta phase. The firm hopes to monitor its performance across various platforms and territories, and also gather feedback from users. They also want to “iron out any kinks” first before doing a final, worldwide release in July.
