This posts goes to all Naija married women waiting to get pregnant. Are you married and not yet pregnant? here are some things you can do while you wait:
1. Take prenatal multivitamins particularly those rich in folic acid as these would reduce the risk of brain and spinal cord birth defects during your pregnancy.
2. Develop a strong savings culture. Raising children has its toll on your finances so be prepared.
3. Have a heart-to-heart discussion with your spouse about how best responsibilities would be shared when the children come; so each party can be psychological prepared for the responsibilities ahead.
4. Women have a long discussion with your mother. Did she have any challenges with getting pregnant, did she have fibroid or any gynecological condition your doctor may need to know about as some of these are hereditary and may need to be checked out by your doctor.
What was her delivery experience like, where there any post natal issues? Etcetera.
5. Use the opportunity to get a lot of rest, enjoy the alone time with your spouse. See it as an opportunity to understand each other better, bond. I have observed the reason why most marriages almost fail in the first year is because alot of women get pregnant soon after honeymoon.
The pregnancy changes the attitude of the woman. The husband is finding it hard to adjust as he suddenly doesn’t understand the woman he married. The finances are climbing and everyone just seems more short fused than previously.
So please enjoy yourselves! Take lots of photos to keep the memories. The babies would surely come but make sure you have enough stories to tell them.
6. Focus on your career. A post graduate program wouldn’t be a bad idea. Master’s after children is tough so make the best of this time available.
7. You also want to cut back on unhealthy lifestyles and habits such as smoking, drinking. Cut back on highly caffeinated drinks as studies have shown this can increase predisposition to miscarriages. So are some herbal teas. You can ask your doctor for more advice in this area.
You could also get urine pregnancy test strips (they are quite affordable-about N50 – N100 for one) so you can always do a quick check if you’re pregnant before taking the usual anti-malaria drugs or injectables that could harm a baby in the early stages.
8. Read articles on parenting and child care so you’re better informed and not caught unawares when the babies arrive.
9. Take out time to pray for your unborn children letting God know how you want them to turn out in every area of their lives.
10. Finally, relax and stay positive and don’t loose faith. I have seen God prove himself so many times it won’t be different for you.
Thanks alot for taking time off your busy schedule to visit. Hope you visit again.
